Things that Irritate Poker Dealers

After your first night dealing you realize you’re in for some interesting experiences. Some of them will be very nice, like the good looking female poker player hitting on you during shift. Others won’t be so nice, or so tolerable. In this article you are going to learn 3 of the most common issues to arise at the tables that will annoy you, upset you and maybe even disgust you. The benefit of knowing it going into your day is that you will be better able to handle each situation as it arises.

A Whiny Poker Player

One of the easier problems that you will likely encounter at every poker night event is the whiny poker player. Often these players have hit bottom, more than once in the game. Every time they get a bad beat, or are called on a bluff, you will hear the whine of disappointment. There will be nights that you will be dealing at a table with a card shark surrounded by a pool of fish. When that happens you can anticipate every fish to begin to sound like finger nails across a chalk board. When the tables gets that bad, enjoy your break, and relax while you are not at the table. Try to clear your mind before going back, so as not to let on how unbelievably intolerable they are. Responding to the insufferable whining will only get things hairy with your casino manager, thus they are not worth the efforts. At the table, take a deep breath and deal the cards.

The Drunken Player

Another expected behavior would be the poker player that has had far too much to drink. A drunken poker player is never a good poker player. Besides making sure the waitresses stop serving him, you need to employ the guidelines your casino has in place for handling them. For many casinos that may include not dealing them into a poker game or tournament, just be certain you know how to approach, prior to working the table. Once they are gone, enjoy the rest of your table.

The Lazy Player

Ok the first two are expected, likely every night, but this next one just agitates many poker dealers: The lazy poker player. What, you ask, is a lazy poker player? They are the players that almost push in the blind, but don’t pass the bet line. They would pass you their folded cards by way of air mail. In essence they might be quiet overall, but these are simply rude players. This kind of behavior may not be encountered nightly, but when it is, it will drive you nuts. One of the biggest reasons would be you know you can’t return the favor. If the need should ever come, feel free to imagine the results of a returned pass. If they landed a pot and you pushed it just to your side of the line. Never get caught following through though. Even if the other poker players would clearly understand the action, your table, floor or casino manager might not be so understanding.

Now you are aware of just a few of the major annoyances you will be facing as a poker dealer. These are often going to plague you even when you are in the larger establishments, and perhaps when you least expect it. Again, you are arming yourself with the knowledge to act appropriately, by being prepared. Don’t let these or any other offensive, annoying or difficult poker player bring down your cool, your job or you. After all it is just a game, right?
